Why watts are the most misleading number on the page

Every listing shouts a wattage figure, and it's the number buyers lean on most, which is a problem because it's also the least informative. All 111 bikes in our data publish a nominal motor wattage, with a median of 750 W. That figure is largely a regulatory label, not a performance promise. Only 71 of those bikes publish a peak wattage figure, median 1100 W, and peak is a short burst rating, not something the motor sustains on a climb.

What you actually want to read is torque, measured in Nm. Torque is the number that tells you how hard the motor pulls when you pull away from a stop, climb a hill, or start moving with a loaded cargo rack. Between two bikes with identical wattage, the one with higher torque will handle load and grade better. If the spec sheet buries torque or doesn't list it, that's worth noticing. Class 1, 2, and 3, in short

Is a higher wattage motor always better?

Not really. Wattage, especially the nominal figure every bike lists, is more of a regulatory label than a performance guarantee. Torque, measured in Nm, is the better indicator of how the bike handles hills, load, and stop-and-go starts.

Do I need a class 3 e-bike?
