A bike that sits in a shed and gets used twice a summer is not worth it at any price. A bike that replaces the car for a 3-mile round trip to the grocery store, four times a week, pays for itself in a way a spreadsheet can prove. What would this actually replace?
Before you look at a single spec sheet, work out your actual trip pattern. Short car journeys, the ones under a few miles, are where an e-bike does the most damage to your fuel and parking spend, because those trips are frequent, small, and rarely worth warming up the engine for. If most of your driving is long-distance or highway, an e-bike isn't replacing that. It's replacing nothing, and you're buying a hobby, which is fine, just be honest about which one you're buying.
The trips worth counting are the boring ones: the school run, the commute, the pharmacy, the gym bag you don't want to carry on foot. If you can picture five or six of those a week that currently involve a car key, you're in the group where an e-bike earns its keep. If you can't, the case gets a lot weaker, no matter how good the bike is.
Where an e-bike genuinely wins
Three situations come up again and again in the bikes we review. Short car trips, because the motor removes the main excuse (arriving sweaty, or not fancying the effort for a five-minute journey). That third case is bigger than people expect. Running costs, and why the electricity barely matters
Battery capacity across the bikes we've scored ranges from 345.6Wh up to 2,100Wh, with a median around 720Wh. People fixate on this number expecting it to drive running costs, but charging a battery in that range off household electricity is a trivial cost next to what you're saving by not driving. The electricity is not the reason to do the maths on an e-bike. It's a rounding error.
The real ongoing cost is wear: tyres, brake pads, and eventually a drivetrain or a replacement battery years down the line. None of that is exotic or e-bike-specific, it's the same maintenance a regular bike needs, just a bit more of it because the bike is heavier and faster. The costs people forget to budget for
The bike price is the headline, but three things get left off the list every time. Secure storage: an e-bike left in a shared hallway or an unlocked yard is a target, and if you don't have a garage, shed, or lockable storage, factor that into what you buy and where you keep it. A good lock is not optional. E-bikes are worth more than analog bikes and thieves know it, so the lock budget should reflect the bike's value, not be an afterthought bought for a tenner at the till.
Tyres and brake pads wear faster on an e-bike than a regular bicycle, because the bike is heavier and typically ridden harder and more often once it replaces car trips. That's a good problem, it means the bike is doing its job, but it's a real recurring cost that doesn't show up in the sticker price and does show up in year two.
Who should not buy one
If you don't have anywhere secure to store a bike, hold off, or budget properly for storage and a serious lock before you spend on the bike itself. A great e-bike stolen in month two isn't a value story, it's a write-off.
If your car trips are already mostly long-distance, or your current routine has almost no short trips to replace, an e-bike won't move your monthly spending in any meaningful way. What's actually available at each price point
Of the 111 bikes we've scored, prices run from $799.99 to $4,999, with a median of $1,799. Six sit under $1,000, 34 come in under $1,500, and 82, the large majority, are under $2,000.
